Which Filler Is Right For You?

Dermal fillers offer a wide array of benefits, such as simple injections, near-immediate results, no downtime, and customizable treatment options. But with the increasing number of dermal fillers available, it can be challenging to decide which filler best meets your needs. John W. Tyrone, MD, PLLC, Plastic Surgery offers several innovative cosmetic fillers from the most trusted brands in professional aesthetics. During your appointment, our skin care professionals will go over each of the following dermal fillers. Then, based on your goals for treatment, we may recommend one or more types of cosmetic injectable.

Types Of Fillers

Dermal fillers and cosmetic injectables exist in a wide range of different formulations, each intended to help boost, volumize, fill, or relax the treatment area. Our available products fall into three categories: hyaluronic acid fillers, neuromodulators, and deoxycholic acid fillers. Our skin specialists will help you select the ideal type of filler or fillers to help you meet your beauty objectives during your consultation.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

The most common type of cosmetic filler, hyaluronic acid fillers, leverage the power of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance in the body) in its highest concentrations to boost hydration, add definition, and volumize the skin. The Hyaluronic acid fillers we offer include RHA® Fillers, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC, JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC, and JUVÉDERM® XC. They can restore definition to multiple areas of the face, minimize facial scarring and skin burns, boost volume in sunken cheeks, and decrease or remove the appearance of frown lines, laugh lines, wrinkles around the nose and mouth, and crows feet, among other uses. Hyaluronic acid fillers stimulate collagen production and, once injected, attract a significant amount of water, which ultimately allows the skin to appear naturally plump. As a result, HA fillers can be used on multiple parts of the face.

Neuromodulators

neuromodulator is a wrinkle-relaxing and skin-softening injection of botulinum toxin. BOTOX®, one of the most popular cosmetic neuromodulators, acts as a wrinkle-relaxer, producing visible improvements to the appearance of wrinkles, frown lines, and other visible signs of aging. BOTOX® is the only neuromodulator FDA-approved for treating excessive sweating, aging skin, crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead furrows, sagging skin, and wrinkles. As the neuromodulator is injected into the skin, the facial muscles are restricted from contracting, resulting in the appearance of reduced or erased wrinkles, decreased oil production, and increased facial contouring for a more youthful and refreshing appearance.

Deoxycholic Acid Injections

Deoxycholic acid injections are used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate-to-severe submental fat, or fatty tissue located under the chin. KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to target and destroy fat cells located under the chin to improve the profile. This treatment uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that facilitates the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into submental fat, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, these fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, producing an improved, slimmer profile with lasting results. What Areas Do Dermal Fillers Treat?

The most common use for dermal fillers is improving the appearance of skin located on the face, including the jawline, forehead, temples, lips, eyebrows, cheeks, chin, and hairline. In addition, products commonly referred to as wrinkle fillers are also used to tighten lax skin on the hands and improve the appearance and visibility of dermal scarring. While each of our available injectable products is designed to treat a specific area, many of our patients choose to receive more than one type of cosmetic filler treatment to reap the benefits of a well-rounded treatment plan.

How To Prepare For Cosmetic Injections

There is not much preparation required for treatments with cosmetic injections, as these procedures are non-invasive and non-surgical. However, to help ensure optimal results following your treatment, our skin care specialists will provide you with specific instructions for preparing for your procedure. At a minimum, we recommend avoiding over-the-counter blood thinners and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) as well as certain natural supplements, including St. John’s wort, Ginkgo Biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and vitamin C, at least a week before treatment.

Additionally, patients should cease alcohol consumption for a minimum of 24 hours before their treatment. For two days before treatment, patients should avoid topical chemical exfoliants, such as those containing ingredients like tretinoin (Retin-A), retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, or any “anti-aging” products, as well as waxing bleaching, tweezing, or the use of hair-removal cream on the treatment area. While most patients are eligible for cosmetic injection treatments, those who are allergic to any ingredients in their chosen filler, pregnant or breastfeeding, and those suffering from certain neurological disorders are ineligible for these treatments.

What To Expect During Treatment

The duration of patients’ appointments for dermal fillers may vary, but, in general, filler appointments last approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the type of injection and the number of injections per session. Most patients do not require anesthesia, as cosmetic fillers and injectables are relatively painless. However, patients may receive a topical or injected anesthetic before treatment. Each injectable treatment uses fine needles delicately and precisely placed under the skin in the respective treatment area. Visible improvements to the skin following cosmetic injections are typically evident right away, though some fillers may require 1–5 days for full results to appear. Results from cosmetic injections can last from 1–4 months to a year or longer, depending on the product. The number of injections and sessions required depends upon several factors, such as a patient’s goals for treatment or the size and depth of their wrinkles, among other factors unique to each person. Scheduling follow-up injections, however, is recommended to help ensure results and improvements are maintained.

Dermal Filler Aftercare

As with instructions for the days preceding treatment, our skin specialists will provide instructions for cosmetic injection aftercare during your appointment. Potential side effects vary depending on the type of filler or injectable chosen. However, side effects from dermal fillers are typically mild and may include redness and swelling near the injection site(s). To reduce the risk of bruising, infection, and soreness, please avoid touching the injection site for a minimum of 6 hours following treatment. Following this, patients should gently cleanse the area and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Patients should avoid exercise, rigorous activities, and alcohol consumption for one or more days following treatment. The majority of patients can return to their usual activities immediately after their appointment.
