KYBELLA® In Gainesville, FL

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved, injectable treatment that targets fat beneath the chin. The process utilizes deoxycholic acid, a formulated substance based on naturally occurring molecules found in the body that destroy fat cells. Unlike a surgical neck lift, the process requires no incisions, and recovery is minimal. Kybella® is best used for patients who are 18 years and older, have moderate to severe fat underneath their chins, are not planning to have facial surgery, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have infections or medical conditions near the neck, chin, or throat.

How Does Kybella® Work?

Kybella® works through multiple injections of deoxycholic acid, which is naturally produced by the body and aids in breaking down and absorbing dietary fat. Once injected into the chin area, the deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells so fat can no longer be stored there. Multiple injections are done during a single session to ensure even distribution, and the number of treatment sessions required will vary for each person, with up to six sessions spaced a month apart. Sessions are typically as short as 15–20 minutes.

How Long Does Kybella® Last?

Kybella® offers lasting results that are considered permanent. By following a healthy lifestyle, you shouldn’t develop fatty deposits underneath your chin again! A smooth, tightened jawline and chin can be yours in as little as 16 weeks! Contact John W. Tyrone, MD, PLLC, Plastic Surgery to schedule your Kybella® consultation today.

Kybella® Aftercare

Following injections with Kybella®, patients may notice a small amount of swelling or bruising at the injection sites. This is temporary and should subside within a few weeks, which is why sessions are scheduled a month or so apart so the body has time to heal and the likelihood of swelling and bruising is reduced. You may treat swelling with ice or cold packs, and warm compresses the first few days after injections. Taking over-the-counter antihistamines before your appointment can also help reduce swelling post-procedure. Over-the-counter pain medications can also help manage pain and reduce swelling. Patients should follow the Kybella® aftercare instructions, as directed by their physician, provided during their appointment with us. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to our office!

Kybella® Side Effects

For most patients, recovery is minimal and side effects usually occur after the first treatment session, including swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, itching, headache, nausea, and hardness around the injection site. Most side effects go away within two weeks.

Before any procedure, you should speak with your doctor to discuss your medical history, potential allergic reactions, infections, and complications. Serious side effects are rare but may include uneven smile caused by nerve damage, trouble swallowing or eating, open sores, skin tissue damage, muscle weakness in the face, hair loss at the injection site, and infection. Most side effects can be mitigated by choosing a licensed and certified doctor to perform the procedure.
