How Does BOTOX® Work?
BOTOX® is an injectable neuromodulator that relaxes nerve-muscle imbalances. Wherever BOTOX® is injected, the underlying muscles temporarily stop moving, causing wrinkles and fine lines to stop forming. BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered during an in-office appointment that takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The injection location and dosage are dictated by several factors unique to each patient. The depth, length, quantity, and location of wrinkled and fine lines vary from patient to patient. The injection is performed using a syringe to localize areas on the face. Patients often report feeling little or no pain as the needle enters through the skin. However, the treatment areas may be numbed about 10 minutes before the injections with topical anesthesia.
Does BOTOX® Prevent Wrinkles?
Absolutely. BOTOX® is a highly purified toxin that temporarily erases or reduces horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines, and crow's feet. The injections slow muscles that contract hundreds of times each day and eventually etch lines and wrinkles into the skin. BOTOX® disrupts nerve stimulation of muscles that cause excess facial expressions. As a result, when the muscles relax, the lines and wrinkles diminish. In addition to treating frown lines located in between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow's feet, BOTOX® lifts the corners of the mouth that descend with age, soften smoker's lines around the mouth, blur vertical neck lines, and even out chins with a "pincushion" appearance.
BOTOX® Before And After
Results from treatments with BOTOX® are real and evident. BOTOX® injections usually begin working 1–5 days following injection and can produce results that last for months. BOTOX® is not designed to remove facial expressions but rather soften lines etched into the skin from excessive facial expressions caused by repeated squinting, frowning, and smiling. When performed by skin care professionals, this treatment can provide multiple areas of the face with an appealing and sincere look that maximizes each patient's natural beauty. Results following injections with BOTOX® leave a fresher, more cheerful, and more youthful look that appears natural to others.
When To Start BOTOX®
The ideal age to start using BOTOX® varies from person to person. Receiving treatment with BOTOX® is much more about anatomy, genetic factors, and environmental factors than it is about chronological age. Among the most popular uses for this cosmetic injection, preventative BOTOX® can be used in patients over the age of 18 to help prevent the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. When you smile or frown, lines may develop during the expression and generally go away when the face is relaxed. When lines remain on a face at rest, this is an ideal time to consider receiving initial treatments with BOTOX®. How Long Does BOTOX® Last?
Each patient is different, and, as a result, the length of time results from BOTOX® injections last varies from person to person. Depending on the problem area treated, the effect may last longer or shorter than the average. To maintain the effects of BOTOX®, patients require follow-up injections. In general, results from BOTOX® can be seen within 1–5 days following treatment and may last for 3–6 months with no downtime or surgery and little-to-no discomfort. Some patients may even enjoy treatments every three months, while others schedule additional treatments every 4–6 months.
Is BOTOX® Safe?
Yes! BOTOX® injections are relatively safe when performed by experienced skin care professionals. BOTOX® is approved by the FDA and has a long, trusted history in the cosmetic community. However, despite its popularity and long history of use, BOTOX® should only be administered by a qualified practitioner. Patients who receive injections by an inexperienced provider risk bruising, over-medicating, and ultimately, experiencing undesirable results. BOTOX® side effects are rare and temporary. However, potential side effects may include brief, mild drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows, slight bruising at the injection site, and headaches. Patients who may not be candidates for BOTOX® include those with known allergies to BOTOX® or any of its ingredients, pregnant or lactating women, and those with a skin infection at the planned injection site. The primary goal of BOTOX® aftercare is to encourage optimal treatment results. Proper aftercare can likewise decrease the possibilities of bruising and other potential side effects. Generally, on the day a patient receives treatment, they should gently exercise their face; relax for the rest of the day; maintain a normal heart rate; avoid touching, rubbing, or exerting physical pressure on the affected area; and leave the treated area alone. BOTOX® injections don't require any recovery time, and, therefore, patients may resume their usual activities directly after their appointment. However, patients should wait at least 24 hours after injections to exercise, go makeup-free for at least 24 hours, sit up for the first 4 hours after the injection, and consult their physician about resuming any regular medications. Patients will receive complete aftercare instructions during their appointment.
