Fat Injections

As the face ages, skin laxity increases and facial volume decreases. Fat injections are one way to restore lost volume to the face and fill out the lax skin. Fat injections to treat facial folds and wrinkles as well as post-liposuction deformities caused by over aggressive liposuction have become increasingly popular over the past few years.

The procedure involves fat removal from one area of your body and injecting it into another. For example, fat can be harvested from the abdomen and then used to add volume to the cheeks, nasolabial folds, lips and even the hands. There is no chance of an allergic reaction or rejection as with some other injectables because the fat is from you. Unlike other injectable treatments, fat injections leads to some permanent correction in the treated areas; however, to maintain optimal results, treatments may need to be repeated though not as often as with other fillers.

Approximately 50% of injected fat grafts demonstrate long term, permanent survival. To compensate for the 50% of injected fat that does not become permanent, Dr. Tyrone will over-correct the areas to be treated. For this reason, it is normal to be quite swollen after treatment with fat injections. Fat grafting may be repeated at prescribed time intervals until you are satisfied with your results. Compared to injectable fillers such as Restylane®, fat transfers are done in an operating room setting to maintain sterility. Fat injections require more time and effort on the part of Dr. Tyrone and his staff; however, the long term results are worth the additional work and patient recovery.
